Challenges

New business models

The digital transformation has brought with it new business models, which we need to know inside and out to offer the best solutions to our customers:

Software as a Service

SaaS (Software as a Service) is a business model in which the software and the data processed by it are stored on a vendor’s servers and accessed via the network. SaaS is managed and used by a third party, just like an application. It is not a customisable package, since it looks the same to every customer. To use it, one need only just log in and subscribe.

Advantages

  • Easy to implement
  • Low cost
  • Better user control (you don’t pay for the software, just for using it)

Subscription

This model consists of selling products, services, goods or content to a customer, who pays periodically to access them. If the customer stops paying the relevant fees, they immediately stop receiving these services.

Advantages

  • Little investment to access the product
  • Low risk thanks to the trial period
  • Easy planning to cover the expenses

Freemium

This is one of the most common digital models in the software world. Customers get free access to a basic and limited version of the product (freemium). If they eventually decide to go with a more complete version, they must pay for it (premium).

Advantages

  • Easy to hook the customer to switch to a subscription model
  • Free offer at first

Open-source code

In this model, the software is downloaded free of charge and can be used with no limits by anyone who wants to access it. Word of mouth helps to spread it quickly. However, the rights are exclusive to those who own the copyright, published under an open-source or public-domain licence.

Advantages

  • Unlimited access
  • Wide distribution
